Gut shorter (usually only 50% SL) than in other species; eye rounder and larger than in other bathylagids (not stalked); fin rays develop in finfold, away from body margin; large size at hatching, notochord flexion, and transformation; larval pigment visible in juveniles up to about 50 mm SL; low preanal myomere count (about 24-25); high postanal myomere count (about 27-28), and high total count (49-53); low dorsal fin ray count (6-9); high anal fin ray count (20-28) (Ref. 35604). Pigmentation: large isolated melanophores. Preflexion: pigment on lower jaw, midgut, and tail. Flexion: opposing dorsal and ventral midline melanophores; large melanophores on head and pectoral fin base; large lateral blotch at base of caudal fin. Sequence of fin development: caudal, dorsal, anal, pectorals, pelvics Distinguishing characters from other bathylagids without eyestalks: large isolated spots; B. wesethi has a series of melanophoes along hypaxial region, large eye, and spots posteriorly along dorsal midline; Leuroglossusspp. larvae have smaller ayes and no dorsal spots. |
