| Spawning ground(s) off Western Australia are unknown, but are possibly around reefs ranging from three to eight km out to sea, or in open waters well offshore (Ref. 27695). Not much is known about migratory patterns in Western Australian waters, but that tailor begin to travel north in early spring, apparently spawning enroute when they find the right offshore conditions (Ref. 27695). Tailor on the east coast of Australia also have a 'circular' north-south migratory pattern apparently connected with spawning. Fraser Island is thought to be the spawning location (Ref. 27695). However, the results of a recent study show that the spawning season of P. saltatrix along the east coast of Australia is more protracted and occurs over a wider area (Ref. 27716). More studies are needed though to determine whether P. saltator has one continuous or two discrete spawning seasons along the eastern coast of Australia (Ref. 27716).
Sea surface temperatures around Fraser Island range between 19° in July (no spawning) and 25°C (spawning) in October. Tailor are also "running ripe" at times other than during the full moon (Ref. 27685). |
