Max. size:  9 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish
Distribution:  Europe: Black Sea basin, in Danube drainage; Aegean Sea basin, in Maritza and from Galikos to Pinios drainages.
Diagnosis:  Body depth 12-18% SL. Presence of a midlateral row of 10-17 (rarely 8-9) dark blotches along flank. Ventral adipose crest on caudal peduncle absent or less developed than dorsal one. Absence of row of small spots directly below midlateral blotches (if present, then most prominent between pelvic and anal bases). Dorsal origin above pelvic origin. Interspaces between midlateral blotches without dark pigmentation. Body above midlateral blotches brown with whitish to yellowish marbling or vermiculations. 10-17, rarely 8-9 dorsal blotches.
Biology:  During daylight, adults are found burrowing into sand, sometimes in gravel on hill streams with clear water (Ref. 59043). Also found in moderate current with few plants at water depths up to 1.5 m. Have also been observed in large rivers (Ref. 59043). Spawning occurs in spring. (Ref. 59043). Population is locally threatened by habitat alterations (Ref. 59043).

Country info:  Reported as extirpated in Ref. 41386. This species initially occurred in the River Bečva, but intensive surveys in 1997-2000 did not reveal its presence there anymore that it was classified to be extinct (Ref. 41386). In 2001, its presence was discovered in the River Vlára (the Váh drainage area, Danube basin) and the species has spread there through spontaneous migration from the lower part of the River Vlára lying in the territory of Slovakia (Ref. 52149). Also Ref. 54732. Status of threat: Critically endangered, B(2a) , C (Ref. 52149, 89840).
