Family:  Congridae (Conger and garden eels), subfamily: Heterocongrinae
Max. size:  59.8 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 11 - 53 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Eastern Central Pacific: probably restricted to the Hawaiian archipelago.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Benthic, burrowing in sand (Ref. 58302). Feeds on zooplankton.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 24 November 2016 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Specimens were collected only from the island of Hawaii, but have been observed from Lanai, Oahu, Maui, and Molokini off Maui. Museum: Hawaii, Kona coast, BPBM 21074 (holotype of G. hawaiiensis, 52.1 cm TL); BPBM 21075 (paratypes). Hawaii, BPBM 29288; AMS I.20104-001 29288 (paratype). Oahu, Waianae coast, NMNZ P.36204 (leptocephalus) (Ref. 33408). Also Ref. 58302, 122680.
