Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Max. size:  11.8 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Occurs along the entire coast between Ngara and Chizi Point.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Some individuals of a population are very shy and hide permanently in caves whereas others form large schools over sand. Feeds on sand-dwelling invertebrates (Ref. 5595).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Known from Mbenji Island and Chilumba. Exported as an aquarium fish (Ref. 5595).
