Max. size:  11 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; brackish; pH range: 7 - 7.5; dH range: 20 - 30, non-migratory
Distribution:  North and Central America: Rio San Juan, Mexico to Guatemala. At least one country reports adverse ecological impact after introduction.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in warm springs and their effluents, canals and weedy ditches, and stream pools (Ref. 5723). Food is mainly detritus (Ref. 36880). Some populations in caves (Ref. 27297).

Threat to humans:  potential pest
Country info:  Reintroduced in 1978 by Fisheries Division/FAO (Ref. 33576). Cultured at a mangrove marsh in Vaitoloa, Vaiusu Bay, near Apia for a live baitfish project for the pole and line skipjack fishery (Ref. 1739). The effort did not prove to be commercially sound (Ref. 9419).
