Family:  Ogcocephalidae (Batfishes)
Max. size:  11 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 185 - 520 m
Distribution:  Eastern Pacific: endemic to Hawaii.
Diagnosis:  This species is distinguished by the following characters: fine reticulate color pattern on dorsal surface (uniformly brown or creamy white in some preserved specimens); eye large, 12.5-14.9% SL; interorbital space narrow, 4.4-6.1% SL, forming a groove; rostral protuberance short and blunt, directed upward; principal bucklers blunt and relatively few in number, naked between principal bucklers; no buckler dorsal to orbit; ventral surface with few small bucklers forming a large naked area; subopercular buckler with 1 spine directed forward; relatively small adult body size (< 70 mm SL) (Ref. 84006).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Known from Hawai'I Island to Laysan at 210-520 m (Ref. 58302). Also Ref. 559. Museum record USNM 231819 is reidentified as M. mitrigera, which is sympatric with this species. Figure in Chave & Mundy, 1994 (Ref. 7460:372,fig.21) also refers to M. mitrigera (Ref. 84006).
