Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Atlantic and Gulf Slope drainages from New Hampshire to Nueces River in Texas, USA; St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi River basins from Quebec to Saskatchewan in Canada and south to Gulf of Mexico in USA.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits lakes, rock-, mud-bottomed or detritus-bottomed pools and backwaters of lowland creeks and small to large rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Feeds on midge, isopods, amphipods, mayfly and caddis larvae (Ref. 10294).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 01 March 2012 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Type locality: Wallkill River, New York (Ref. 79012). Recorded above Fall Line in Mississippi Basin and Great Lakes and southern Hudson Bay drainages (Ref. 10294). Absent from Appalachian and Ozark Highlands. Transplanted to Snake River in Idaho and Oregon; presumably introduced into Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Considered excellent bait in the country (Ref. 52559).
