Max. size:  5.7 cm TL (male/unsexed); 4.6 cm SL (female)
Environment:  demersal; marine
Distribution:  Southeast Atlantic: South Africa.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 60-67; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 40-45; Vertebrae: 37-40. This species is distinguished by the following: vertebrae 11-12 + 26-28 = 37-40, dorsal fin rays 60-67, anal fin rays 40-45; snout is inferior; scales absent; pelvic fin do not extend beyond posterior end of pectoral fin; pectoral fin length 12.3-12.7 % SL; posterior nostril small, about half the size of eye; lower preopercular pores 2, small; weak spine on maxilla positioned behind rear tip of eye; single pair of pseudoclaspers dorsally curved at their distal ends, about half the length of penis (Ref. 57886).
Biology:  Uncommon species (Ref. 34024) found in shallow waters (Ref. 6610), including tidepools (Ref. 57886). Maximum length for female given in Ref. 57886.

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Type locality, Bird Island, Algoa Bay, tidepools, RUSI 340 (holotype of Dermatopsoides talboti, 4 cm SL, male). Known from False Bay, near Cape Town to Algoa Bay, near Port Elizabeth (Ref. 57886).
