Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine; depth range 2 - 15 m
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: south to Delagoa Bay, Mozambique.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 4-4; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7-8; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 6-8. Body marbled with grey; pectoral fins and distal part of pelvic fins rose or red in color (Ref. 4405).
Biology:  Occurs on soft bottom among algae or seagrass (Ref. 111072).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 24 March 2022 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Type localities of Callionymus marmoratus (syntypes), Callionymus elegans and Callionymus perelegans. Ranges from Delagoa Bay northward. Recorded from Inhaca I. (Ref. 5285). Also Ref. 4405, 41878, 75992.
