Family:  Congridae (Conger and garden eels), subfamily: Congrinae
Max. size:  57 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 300 - 500 m
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: Gulf of Aqaba. Also found in the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Probably occurring in the Gulf of Suez but no specimens are available.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Swims close to the bottom in zigzag movements. Caught by traps and trammel nets (Ref. 7446).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  A lessepsian migrant, first recorded from Haifa before 1993 (Ref. 72453). Known also from Elat and Nuweiba. Museum: Elat, Gulf of Aqaba, HUJ 16517 (holotype of R. trewavasae, 49.2 cm SL) (Ref. 7446). Entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. The speculated reasons for its success in establishment are presumably the long pelagic larval stage which enable the crossine og long distances (Ref. 43448).
