Family:  Batrachoididae (Toadfishes), subfamily: Halophryninae
Max. size:  27 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: Apparently restricted to the western coast of India from Cochin north at least to the Malabar area. Records from Sri Lanka may be a different species.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 3-3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 20-20; Anal soft rays: 16-16. This species is distinguished by having 2 or more tentacles above the eye (Ref. 89101).
Biology:  Prefers muddy bottoms (Ref. 68964). Caught by handlines and bottom trawls. Sold mostly fresh in markets.
IUCN Red List Status: Not Evaluated (N.E.) Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Type locality, Malabar, USNM 147914 (Ref. 57811). Found along the coast (Ref. 45255). Apparently restricted to the western coast of India from Cochin north at least to the Malabar area (Ref. 89101). Also Ref. 3316.
