Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; brackish; depth range 3 - 20 m
Distribution:  Asia: Amur to Red River drainages (China to Vietnam); Taiwan and Lake Buir in Mongolia.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Adults inhabit rivers and lakes. Feed on insects, crustaceans and smaller fishes.

Country info:  Known from Zhu Jiang (=Pearl River) delta in Guangdong Province and from drainages in Hainan Island and their river mouths (Ref. 33303) in northern China, southward as far as the Yangtze River (=Changjiang River) and farther, Liao River, Lake Khanka (Ref. 1441) and Lianzi Lake (Ref. 38003) and and Tungting Lake where it is known as "Bai-yü" or "whitefish" (Ref. 35840). Introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (extensive stocking in all great inland waters) (Ref. 55380). 14 specimens from Nandujiang River system, Fucheng, Qiongshan county, Anding county in Hainan Province; Wenjiao River, Wanquanhe River system of Shibi, Wenqu, Jiaji; Wanning county of Longshou River; Chengguan and Wanning county of Taiyang River (Ref. 33303).
