Max. size:  346 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 600 kg; max. reported age: 33 years
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine, anadromous
Distribution:  Northwest Pacific: China and Japan (Sagami Sea) (Ref. 4537). Reported from Korea (Ref. 12218). Pearl River and Chinese sea (Ref. 42845).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 50-57; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 32-40. Body shields in 5 rows; dorsal shields 10 to 17.
Biology:  Fry can be found in slow moving waters, adults in deep waters (Ref. 12218). Used in Chinese medicine (Ref. 12166). Reported to reach a length of more than 3 meters (Ref. 109736).

Country info:  Found in the Yangtze River (=ChangJiang River) (Ref. 12218); report not documented in Ref. 45259, Xijiang drainage and Zhujiang (=Peal River) river mouth (Ref. 52359). Becoming extinct in Huang He (=Yellow River), Minjiang and Qiangtang rivers and rare in Zhujiang River (Ref. 45563); During 1960 to 1970, annual production of this species in the upper reaches of Changjiang (=Yangtze) River totalled 20,000 -25,000 kilograms (Ref. 45563). Introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (for conservation). Extensively stocked in reservoirs (Ref. 55380). Status of threat: Vulnerable (Ref. 45563). Known from Changjiang River (= Yangtze River), Shanghai City, Guangdong Province, and Ningpo of Zhejiang Province Also Ref. 4537, 31517, 36732.
