Max. size:  300 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 190 kg; max. reported age: 65 years
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine, anadromous
Distribution:  Asia: Endemic to the Amur River system. Two morphs, brown and gray, represent the species in the Amur River basin. Occurrence in the Sea of Japan (Ref. 11102) needs confirmation.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 38-53; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 20-32. Body shields in 5 rows; dorsal shields 11 to 15, lateral shields 32 to 47 and ventral 7 to 10.
Biology:  Adults occur in stretches of rivers with sandy or stony bottom. Feed on benthic organisms. Highly prized fish (Ref. 41072).

Country info:  Occurs in Heilongjiang River system (Ref. 44306). Also includes lower reaches of Songhuajiang and Wusuli Rivers (Ref. 45563). Stocks declining due to overfishing (Ref. 45563). A cultured fish, introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (extensive stocking in great inland waters) (Ref. 55380). Also Ref. 6376, 31517. Status of threat: Vulnerable (Ref. 45563).
