Family:  Sternoptychidae (Marine hatchetfishes), subfamily: Sternoptychinae
Max. size:  7 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 150 - 700 m
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Papua New Guinea (Ref. 6993) and New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Eastern Pacific: southern British Columbia, Canada to California, USA and farther south (Ref. 2850).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 12-12; Vertebrae: 35-37. Branchiostegal rays: 10 (Ref. 35838). Lower preopercular spine downward and curved forward, upper preopercular spine curved outward. Two postabdominal spines directed ventrally (Ref. 37473).
Biology:  Copepods have been found in the food items consumed by this species (Ref. 6885). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 35838). Minimum depth is from Ref. 82347.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 16 July 2019 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Reported to occur in southern British Columbia by Ref. 2850 but this has to be verified since A.E. Peden reidentifed the Pacific specimens referred to as A. lychnus by Hart 1973 (Ref. 6885) as A. sladeni. Known from LaHave Bank (Ref. 5951).
