Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Torinae
Max. size:  200 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 9,000.0 g; max. reported age: 10 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; depth range - 15 m, potamodromous
Distribution:  Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabit rivers and lakes, also in rapid streams with rocky bottom (Ref. 41236). Grow better in a river with a rocky bottom. Travel toward headwaters at the start of the rainy season and downstream at the end of the rainy season. Omnivorous, feed on filamentous algae, chironomid larvae, water beetles and crustaceans. Spawn from March to September, over stones and gravel (Ref. 40948). Reported to reach 150 cm TL (Ref. 12192), and gain a maximum weight of 68 kg by Thomas, 1897 (Ref. 4832). Considered a long-living species (Ref. 58486).

Country info:  Occurs in hill streams of Mymensingh (Kangsha and Someswari rivers), Sunamgonj (Para river), Dinajpur (Mahananda river) and Chittagong Hill Tracts (Karnafuli reservoir). Found throughout the upper regions of Mymensingh, Sylhet and Dinajpur basin river systems (Ref. 56220). A consignment of this fish has been brought from Nepal and raised in the Freshwater Station of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (Ref. 56220). Also Ref. 4832, 31807, 39989, 41236, 56321.
