Family:  Oxudercidae (Mudskippers), subfamily: Periophthalminae
Max. size:  25.5 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Philippines, eastern Indonesia, and northern Queensland. Also from Papua New Guinea (Ref. 6771).
Diagnosis:  Distinguished by the following characteristics: pectoral fin rays 15-l7; spinous dorsal fin IV-V ; length of Dl base 5.0-8.1 % SL; pelvic fins with frenum and completely united; isthmus lacking scales; snout completely scaled; dorsal fins not contiguous in adult males (Ref. 5218).
Biology:  An intertidal and amphibious air-breather that actively shuttles back and forth between rock pools and air (Ref. 31184).

Country info:  Type locality, Queensland (holotype Periophthalmus australis) (Ref. 075154). Known from NT (Gulf of Carpentaria, N coast), QLD (Gulf of Carpentaria, NE coast), WA (N coast, NW coast); Port Hedland, WA to Burdekin River, QLD (Ref. 075154). Also Ref. 11344.
