Family:  Syngnathidae (Pipefishes and seahorses), subfamily: Syngnathinae
Max. size:  29.6 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 2 - 27 m
Distribution:  Eastern Indian Ocean and Western Pacific: Australia (Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Adults occur over mud, sand, rubble and rocky bottoms. Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Males may be brooding at 17.5 cm SL.

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Known from Queensland (Moreton Bay) and New South Wales (Keppel Bay to Sydney Harbour), from Spencer Gulf, South Australia, and from Broome Harbour to Shark Bay in Western Australia. Type locality: Port Jackson, New South Wales (Ref. 5316).
