Family:  Chimaeridae (Shortnose chimaeras or ratfishes)
Max. size:  90.4 cm TL (male/unsexed); 103.7 cm TL (female)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 120 - 872 m
Distribution:  Indo-Australian: Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in the continental shelf and slope (Ref. 7300). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are encased in horny shells (Ref. 205). Caught with bottom trawls but not utilized at present although its meat is of high quality (Ref. 6871, 9904) but of low value (Ref.58048).

Country info:  Type locality of Chimaera ogilbyi, off Sydney, New South Wales; Hydrolagus lemures, Great Australian Bight, off Eucla, Western Australia; and Hydrolagus waitei, Victoria (Ref. 125617). Recorded from off Queensland Plateau (ca. 17° S, 151° E) south to off New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, east to South Australia and Western Australia north to the Arafura Sea off the Northern Territory (ca. 10° S, 130° E) (Ref. 125617). Abundant in Tasmania where it is a by-catch of vessels fishing for Pterygotrigla polyommata and Nemadactylus macropterus (Ref. 6871). Also Ref. 7300, 75154.
