Family:  Apogonidae (Cardinalfishes), subfamily: Apogoninae
Max. size:  11 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 20 - 300 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: southern Florida, USA and Bahamas to Venezuela; reported to reach Suriname (Ref. 13608) and Abrolhos Shelf (Ref. 126840). Eastern Central Atlantic: Gulf of Guinea. Reported from Cape Verde (Ref. 27000).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 9-9
Biology:  Adults prefer exposed deep reefs and rocky outcroppings (Ref. 7251). Eggs are incubated orally by both parents (Ref. 240). This is the only species in the genus Apogon with mouthbrooding done by males and females (Ref. 85456).
