Max. size:  10 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 1 - 12 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Western Central Pacific: known only from Sulawesi and the Moluccas.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-16; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 13-14. Description: Adult overall brown, pectoral-fin axil orange. Juveniles head, dorsal body, and fins bright orange, ventral mauve, horizontal stripe neon blue from snout to dorsal fin posterior base. Juveniles often swimming well-above the bottom on shallow reef flats. Adults drab and easily overlooked (Ref. 48636). Body depth 1.7-1.9 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults inhabit shallow gutters of rocky areas or coral reefs of protected bays and lagoons. Solitary and shy (Ref. 9710). Often swimming near the surface (Ref. 48636). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Diurnal species (Ref. 113699).
