Distribution:  South America: Rivers of Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Amazon River basin.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Particularly abundant in coastal creeks and floodplains where it is supported by a certain salinity level. It is vulnerable to a trematode parasite which induces a characteristic cutaneous reaction. Reproduction in captivity has been successful (Ref. 12225). Maximum length questionable (Ref. 38376).
