Family:  Gobiidae (Gobies), subfamily: Gobiinae
Max. size:  2.5 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 1 - 15 m
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Japan (Ryukyu Islands), Papua New Guinea (Trobriand Islands), New Caledonia, Fiji (widely distributed but not in the S.E. Lau Grp), Tonga, Australia (Great Barrier Reef), and throughout Micronesia to Kiribati.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-9; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 8-9; Vertebrae: 26-27. This species is distinguished by the following characters: complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system; dorsal/anal-fin formula 9/8; branched pectoral-fin rays; absence of fifth pelvic-fin ray; non-fimbriate urogenital papilla; pectoral-fin base with a single dark vertical bar; the body is light with numerous dark bands on almost full depth of the body (Ref. 107299). Description: Base of pectoral fin with large dark kidney-shaped to semicircular mark; intensity of pectoral mark greater than that of trunk bars; head (dorsally) and nape with dark transverse bars, usually complete over dorsal midline, occasionally one or more bars broken up into spots laterally, some with spots or bars darker laterally than dorsally; trunk with prominent, dark, discrete vertical bars, descending to ventral portion of body and continuous over midline; scale pockets on trunk not pigmented (Ref. 5289).
Biology:  Inhabits shallow reef flats, secretive in corals (Ref. 48637). Common along wave-swept reef margins.
