Family:  Percidae (Perches), subfamily: Etheostomatinae
Max. size:  7.2 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 3 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and Mississippi River basins from southern Quebec to northern Alberta in Canada, and south to Ohio, Illinois and Colorado in the USA.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabit vegetated lakes, pools of headwaters, creeks and small to medium rivers (Ref. 5723). Eggs are found attached to the substrate unguarded (Ref. 7043).
