Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 0 - 2 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Western Pacific: southeastern New Guinea and the nearby D'Entrecasteaux Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-13; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 13-13. Description: Adult overall dark brown, scales edges black, caudal peduncle spot white mid-dorsally. Juvenile overall dark blue, horizontal stripe neon blue along scale rows. Body depth 2.0-2.1 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults inhabit shallow inshore reefs exposed to some wave action (Ref. 7247). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
