Family:  Chirocentridae (Wolf herring)
Max. size:  100 cm SL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 410.0 g
Environment:  pelagic-neritic; marine; depth range 0 - 150 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: tropical, widespread. Questionably occurring in the Mascarenes (Ref. 33390). Distribution is probably similar to that of Chirocentrus dorab but not always distinguished from that species (Ref. 188).
Diagnosis:  Diagnosis: The slightly longer pectoral fin, 13-18% of standard length, and the absence of black markings on the dorsal fin tip are the only satisfactory characters separating this species from Chirocentrus dorab; also there is no black on the anterior part of the anal fin (Ref. 188). Description: Pectoral fin longer than distance between eye centre and hind border of gill cover (Ref. 30573). Scales numerous, small, usually lost (Ref. 37816). Colouration: Silvery; back bright blue, fading to grey; flanks bright silver (Ref. 37816).
Biology:  Pelagic in coastal waters, from the shore to a depth of about 150 m (Ref. 30573). It feeds on small fish and crustaceans (Ref. 5213, 30573). Marketed fresh or frozen.
