Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Astronesthinae
Max. size:  21 cm TL (male/unsexed); 21.2 cm SL (female)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 12 - 4000 m
Distribution:  Circumpolar between 30° and 40°S.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-17; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 12-18. Black in color with pale luminous patches, which develop with growth, on dorsal and ventral caudal peduncle and other parts of body (Ref. 3982).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 7300).

Threat to humans:  harmless
