Family:  Monacanthidae (Filefishes)
Max. size:  45 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; depth range 3 - 2000 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: Massachusetts (USA), Bermuda, and northern Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. Eastern Atlantic: Cape Blanco (north of Mauritania) to Mossamèdès, Angola (Ref. 3592).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 2-2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 36-41; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 39-44. The rudimentary pelvic spine disappears in specimen larger than 13.5 cm SL (Ref. 36453).
Biology:
