Remarks 'Silver', i.e., alluding to the bright silver color of the side below the lateral line and the silver or white color of the ventral surface; 'shiner', i.e., a silvery fish (p. 1086 in Ref. 11978) alluding to the overall silvery coloration of this fish (on sides and ventral portions, Ref. 1998), from prehistoric 'skinan' (p. 474 in Ref. 11979).
