Remarks 'eel' from Middle English, 'ele', from Old English 'ael' and akin to Old High German, 'ãl' (Ref. 11978); 'barbel', from Latin 'barba', i.e., beard, via Old French 'barbe'; refers to the sensitive whisker-like projections round the mouth (Ref. 11979).
