Remarks 'minnow', Middle English 'menawe'; akin to Old English 'myne', i.e., 'minnow', Old High German 'munewa', i.e., a kind of fish (Ref. 27888).; 'silver-sided', i.e., with flanks of the silver color, alluding to the bright silver color of the side below the lateral line and the silver or white color of the ventral surface.
